About Us


Established in 2010, Independent Conflict Research & Analysis (ICRA) carries out discrete and independent research and analysis of conflicts and conflict factors in order to facilitate conflict prevention, management, and resolution initiatives.

Clients are offered discrete private oral or written briefings. Snapshot briefings in written form are available on the issue of interest to the client on a particular topic.

Col. (Ret) Christopher Langton OBE

Head

A senior researcher and analyst with significant field experience in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central
Asia covering areas of peace, conflict, and security. Research experience in the South and Central Asian region in the last decade involving field trips to Afghanistan (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2009), Pakistan
(2004, 2006 and 2007) and Central Asia (2002, 2003, and 2008).
Has published widely on Afghanistan based on extensive fieldwork.

A former senior staff member at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a leading think tank on global strategic affairs. Head of the Defence Analysis Department, then Head of the Conflict Research Programme with niche responsibility for aspects of conflict resolution and specialisation in Afghanistan.

He spent 32 years in the British Army. He served in Northern Ireland, Russia, the South Caucasus where he was Deputy Chief of UNOMIG and held defence attaché appointments in Russia, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia.

Elena Imbimbo Rathgeber

Deputy Head

A researcher and analyst with a Degree in Foreign Languages (Doctor in Russian Language) and a Master’s Degree in International Journalism. Her main focus is the former eastern European countries, Russia, and the Central Asian region. At ICRA, she carries out research and analysis of generic conflict issues, prepares ICRA’s training programmes, lessons in conflict management, discussion papers, and briefings, and helps run the Conflict Analysis & Resolution Training (CART). She also researches and writes ICRA’s Central Asia Journal, a bi-monthly publication that focuses on developments in Central Asia and neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, India, Iran, and Russia.

With extensive experience in the media and editorial sectors, Elena is also a writer, published translator, and an active member of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).
