DEMOBILISATION, DISARMAMENT, AND REINTEGRATION (DDR) IN TAJIKISTAN
Integration of Former United Tajik Opposition Forces (UTO) into the Tajik Armed Forces
Tajikistan became independent in 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. A civil war between the United Tajik Opposition (UTO) and the Tajik government of President Emomali Rahmonov broke out from 1992-1997.
Conventional peace-building methodology supported by the United Nations (UN) focuses on combining disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) of the warring parties with political liberalisation. According to a study from the University of Oxford, the peace process in Tajikistan succeeded despite its unconventional format.
